Lake Głębokie – Challenging Conditions, Interesting Finds

Lake Głębokie is one of the most demanding diving spots in Szczecin. For most of the year, visibility is practically zero, but despite the difficult conditions underwater, you can find many interesting remnants and traces of the history of this place.

I have been exploring this body of water for years and have organized cleanup operations on its bottom. Thanks to this, I had the opportunity to get to know its specific conditions well and discover what lies beneath the surface.

VISIBILITY? PRACTICALLY ZERO

Visibility is the biggest problem at Lake Głębokie.

For most of the year, the water is so murky that you can’t even see the end of your own hand.

Usually, only for about a month during the summer do conditions improve enough to attempt exploration.

The bottom is sandy and slopes gently. The water has a characteristic orange tint, and from about 4 meters deep a dense orange suspension appears.

The deeper you go, the worse it gets.

At some point, the flashlight beam practically stops making a difference.

BATHING AREA – INTERESTING FINDS UNDER THE PIER

One of the more interesting spots is the Głębokie bathing area.

It’s best to explore it off-season, when there are no beachgoers in the water. Just behind the pier, there is a sharp drop to about 4 meters deep..

On the bottom, you can find large metal chains and concrete blocks.

👉 That’s why jumping into the water here can be dangerous.

Right under the pier, however, there is something completely different – a huge amount of trash and items lost by beachgoers.

HUNDREDS OF ITEMS ON THE BOTTOM

During cleanup, I pulled out from there hundreds of bottles, cans, and other waste.

But that’s not all.

On the bottom, I also found:

• watches
• glasses
• toys
• various lost items

The bottom in this part of the lake is sandy, making it easy to find objects.

The problem is that after each season, the situation starts to repeat itself.

People come to the lake to relax, and some of what they bring with them eventually ends up in the water.

HUNDREDS OF HOOKED LURES

Lake Głębokie also has a problem with waste left by anglers.

On underwater trees, there are hundreds of hooked fishing lures.

This is another example of how human activity leaves its mark underwater.

It’s not always something large and visible from the surface.

Sometimes it’s a small lure, a hook, or a piece of fishing line.

TRACES OF AN OLD RESTAURANT

Lake Głębokie also hides remnants of its history.

Near today’s wake park, there used to be a German restaurant.

Underwater, you can still find remains of the old pier, concrete trash bins, and a metal boiler.

These are not spectacular wrecks, but when diving in such an unusual place, every such item becomes an interesting piece of the underwater puzzle.

It’s these little details that allow us to discover the history of places that have completely changed their purpose over time.

A LAKE THAT DOESN’T FORGIVE MISTAKES

Lake Głębokie is not an easy place to dive.

Poor visibility, sudden deterioration of conditions with depth, and the characteristic suspension mean that exploration requires experience.

But that’s exactly what makes this body of water interesting.

You don't dive here for the views. You dive to find something.

I have cleaned Lake Głębokie twice, pulling bottles, cans, and other waste from the bottom.

Each time I am convinced that even in a place that seems to have nothing interesting to offer, underwater there can be a completely different world.
