Kołobrzeg Beach – Underwater Reef at the Pier and Submerged Threshold

The beach at the pier in Kołobrzeg is an interesting shallow diving spot in the Polish part of the Baltic. The sandy bottom, an underwater row of stones resembling a small reef, and the abundant life that concentrates around the rocks mean that you can find considerably more underwater than what the beach visible from the surface would suggest.

SHALLOW DIVING AT THE PIER

It is primarily a shallow dive site. At the end of the pier, the depth is approximately 2.5 meters, and the bottom is mostly sandy.

The most interesting element, however, is located underwater a row of stones – the so-called submerged threshold. It lies at a depth of approximately 2 meters and forms a kind of small underwater reef.

It is this part of the bottom that makes the dive most interesting.

UNDERWATER MINI REEF

The stones of the threshold quickly become a place around which life concentrates.

Among them you can find flatfish, jellyfish, shrimp and crabs, and the stones themselves are covered in various organisms. Thanks to this, in a place that beyond the threshold is primarily sandy, a small but very interesting ecosystem develops.

It is a great example of how even a small variation in the bottom can completely change the character of a shallow dive site.

MYSTERIOUS METAL OBJECT

Near the pier there is also an old metal object resembling a fragment of a cart or wheelbarrow with wheels.

It is not known exactly what it was or how it came to be underwater, but it certainly adds character to this place. For a diver, it is another interesting point that can be found while exploring the area around the pier.

LOGISTICS – THE BIGGEST DRAWBACK

The dive site itself is shallow and interesting, but the problem can be getting to the site with full diving gear.

It is difficult to find convenient parking nearby, and traversing to the water with all your equipment can be tiresome.

When planning a dive, it's worth thinking ahead about equipment transport and choosing an entry point that minimizes unnecessary walking.

PLENTY OF LIFE AT SHALLOW DEPTHS

The greatest advantage of this place is precisely that you don't need to go deep to see interesting underwater life.

The rocks of the threshold attract organisms that we won't find in such numbers on uniform sandy bottom. Flatfish, crabs, shrimp and jellyfish make even shallow diving an interesting observation of Baltic nature.

The beach by the pier shows that an interesting dive site doesn't have to mean great depth or a wreck.

Sandy bottom, an underwater threshold with rocks, abundant life and a mysterious metal object create a place worth exploring from the underwater side as well.

You just need to remember proper logistical preparation – especially if you're bringing all your diving gear into the water.
