Pobierowo Beach – an exceptional diving spot in the Baltic Sea

Pobierowo Beach is one of the most interesting places I have repeatedly explored underwater. At first glance an ordinary Baltic beach hides a stony bottom, rich underwater life, interesting finds with a metal detector, and remains connected to the history of the Baltic Sea.

STONY BOTTOM

It is precisely the stony bottom that is one of the reasons I return here so often with a metal detector.

Enormous glacial boulders create natural shelters for many organisms underwater. Between the stones you can encounter jellyfish, flounders, crabs and shrimp.

While diving, an ordinary beach from the surface transforms into a completely different world.

The parent bottom of the Baltic, hard clay under the stones – even better than the stones alone.

THE PLACE WHERE I FOUND THE MOST GOLD JEWELLERY

Pobierowo is particularly interesting to me also because of underwater searching.

It is here that I have found the most gold jewellery among the places where I dive with a metal detector.

The stony bottom is conducive to such searches, but this does not mean conditions are always good. Much depends on how much sand is currently on the bottom.

EVERYTHING DEPENDS ON SANDING

Conditions in Pobierowo can change very quickly.

Even slight wave action can stir up sand and completely destroy visibility. That is why a day that looks calm from the surface does not always mean good diving conditions.

Bottom sanding is hugely important during metal detector searches too. What is easily accessible one day can be covered by another layer of sand when conditions change.

HISTORY HIDDEN UNDERWATER

Pobierowo also has something for those interested in history.

On the bottom you can see a float from a sea trawl used for mine destruction. It is an interesting trace connected with the wartime history of the Baltic Sea and one of those objects that reminds us how much history still lies beneath the sea's surface.

For me such finds are added value to diving – alongside searching for contemporary objects you can come across items with a much older history.

The trawl float looks a bit like a large bomb. It makes an impression underwater.

THE BALTIC FULL OF LIFE

The rocky bottom makes Pobierowo an exceptionally interesting place for observing underwater life.

Crabs, shrimp, flounder and jellyfish are just some of the organisms you can encounter here.

Large rocks and boulders create natural shelters, so it's worth not just swimming forward, but also carefully looking between individual elements of the seabed.

POBIEROWO FROM A DIVER'S PERSPECTIVE

The beach at Pobierowo shows that an interesting dive site doesn't have to mean a deep wreck.

The main attraction here is the seabed itself and what can be found on it – from rich marine life, through gold jewelry discovered with a metal detector, to historical remains.

However, you need to hit the right conditions. The Baltic Sea can quickly turn good visibility into complete milky suspension, so in this place patience is as important as equipment.

For me, Pobierowo is one of the most interesting places on the Polish coast for metal detector diving. The rocky bottom, the possibility of finding gold jewelry, underwater life and history hidden beneath the water definitely make it worth a dive here.
